Staff Report

With pride and professionalism, a Russell County High School (RCHS) senior has represented her county well and reached a first-ever achievement.

Marlei DeVore, daughter of Davene and Jeric DeVore, is RCHS’s first-ever recipient of a Lighthouse Beacon scholarship.

The scholarship, through the Lighthouse Beacon Foundation, helps students in the area gain access to higher education opportunities-particularly in science, technology, engineering and manufacturing fields- particularly in STEM field, in which Marlei has excelled.

Recipients are chosen based on academic achievement, leadership, work ethic, and commitment to their communities.

“Marlei is the first person from our district to win this scholarship,” RCHS Instructor Carol Ackerman said.

Ackerman praised Marlei’s other achievements.

“She completed her term as State TSA President,” Ackerman said. “Her outstanding leadership, dedication, and commitment to serving others have made a lasting impact. She has represented our school and organization with excellence, and we are incredibly proud of all she has accomplished.”

DeVore is set to compete in the 2026 National Technology Student Association (TSA) Conference next month.

Marlei’s scholarship places her among distinguished students.

“This scholarship has always been about more than helping students get to college,” Kelsey Tackett, Director of Appalachian Engagement for the Lighthouse Beacon Foundation, said. “It’s about making sure they have support, encouragement, and people in their corner once they get there.”

The Lighthouse Beacon Foundation supports educational opportunities for students across Eastern Kentucky through scholarships, mentorship, leadership experiences, and STEM education initiatives.
