Mavis Marlene Cooper, 85, Russell County

Mavis Marlene Cooper, of the Damron Creek Community of Russell County, passed from this life on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at her home.  She was 85 years of age.

Ms. Mavis was born November 23, 1937, on Damron Creek, daughter of the late Alpha B. and Edna P. Hammonds Roy.  She became a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church as a child and at her passing, she was the oldest member on church record.  Ms. Mavis married Jacob Cooper on January 25, 1958.  There were three daughters born to their union.

Ms. Mavis spent many years working in different garment factories in the Russell County area.  For some time, she owned her own Upholstery shop, “The Renewal Shop”, where her workmanship was known across multiple states.  She was a “jill-of-all-trades”; she could build cabinets, run water lines and tackle electrical projects.  Ms. Mavis loved going fishing and her Thursday nights out with family, with a different restaurant to try every week.  She made sure hers was a close-knit family.

She is survived by her three daughters, Linda Marlene Tucker, Bonita Jayne Nelson (and Jeff Costello) and Lynetta Jeanne Guffey, all of Russell Springs; her four grandchildren, Richard (and Kim) Wheat, of Glasgow, Lori (and Aaron) Abney, of Russell Springs, Jerica Guffey, of Campbellsville and Larisa Curtis, of Louisville; seven great-grandchildren, Michaela Santee, Eric Santee, Jacob Stevenson, Rebekah Stevenson, Clarice Wheat, Raelin Stearns and Niah Curtis; one step-great-granddaughter, Taylor Abney; one beloved great-great-grandson, William David Santee; two brothers, Darrel (and Mildred) Roy, of Russell Springs, and Dennis (and Pat) Roy, of Columbia; and two sisters,  Bonnie Foley (and Mike) Robertson, of Russell Springs, and Gayle (and Jerry) Tincher, of Columbia.

Along with her parents, Ms. Mavis is preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Cooper; her grandson, Rodney Wheat; her brothers, Kenneth Roy and Kendal Roy; and her sisters, Faye Wilson, Vada Powel and Madeline Robertson.

Funeral services are 2:00 p.m., Sunday August 13, 2023, at Bernard Funeral Home, with Bro. Glenn Richardson officiating.  Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Richard Wheat, Jacob Stevenson, Darren Roy, David Roy, Aaron Abney and Eric Santee.

Visitation will be held after 9:00 a.m., Sunday, at the funeral home, until time for services.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Lake Cumberland, 100 Parkway Drive, Somerset, KY 42503.

Arrangements for Ms. Mavis Marlene Cooper have been entrusted to Bernard Funeral Home.  An online guestbook is available at www.bernardfuneralhome.com.
