Just before Memorial Day, with reverent respect, a flag raising was held at the H.M. Bottom Firehouse.

Russell Springs Mayor Eddie Thomas, members of the City Council, Russell County Judge Executive Randy Marcum, Jamestown Volunteer Fire Chief Jeff Landers, and other local officials joined the Russell Springs Volunteer Fire Department (RSVFD) and Russell County DAV Chapter 51 last Wednesday to “honor those who protect and serve.”

“I’m really proud to see this flag pole sitting here,” Judge Executive Randy Marcum said. “I think that’s awesome for our county.”

Mayor Thomas praised participants in the solemn ceremony.

“You are heroes,” he said. “And I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

“It’s not only an honor to be here,” the mayor said, “…it’s a privilege.”’

Russell County DAV Chapter 51 Commander James Clark expressed his appreciation.

“This means a lot to us veterans,” he said. “This is the third or fourth flag we’ve helped to put up. ‘Old Glory’ is flying high, and we want to keep it that way.”

“Just remember what it’s all about,” Mayor Thomas said. “Memorial Day is for our veterans…those who gave their life for us to have the freedom we have.”
