When John Irvin steps up to pitch a horseshoe, there’s a strong likelihood to hear that unmistakable, metallic “clink.”

The local horseshoe pitching legend was recently inducted into the Kentucky Horseshoe Pitching Association Hall of Fame.

Irvin, of Russell Springs, received the honor at a ceremony in Chalybeate.

He accepted his distinguished recognition from President of the Kentucky Horseshoe Pitching Association Robert Taylor.

At 89 (He’ll turn 90 in December), Irvin has racked up five state titles including Elders Singles in 2009, 2011, and 2017, and Doubles Division in 2010 and 2014.

“It’s a big deal for any pitcher,” John’s son, Frank Irvin, said, “and ‘Pop’ is well-known for his ability to pitch horseshoes very well, as he won countless tournaments across Kentucky the last 35 years…and numerous, sanctioned tournaments too many to count. He also won the Russell County Fair Horseshoe Tournament many times.”

A former Rookie of the Year in horseshoe circles, John began pitching mule shoes as a child to winning multiple state titles.

He won all of his state titles with a pitching percentage of just over 70 percent-meaning seven to 10 shoes (tossed) were “ringers.”

Several years ago he traveled to South Carolina and pitched in the World Tournament competing against pitchers from across the globe.

“He’s always excelled at horseshoes,” Frank proudly said of his father.
