Thwarting rumors on social media, officials with the City of Russell Springs said last week a project involving a Shogun restaurant is “moving forward.”
Last Thursday, at the regular, monthly meeting of the governing body, Councilwoman Sherry Bottom-Daniel inquired about a Facebook post which allegedly said, “we weren’t getting a Shogun.”
“If it’s on Facebook, it’s true,” she laughed.
“Shogun is contractual,” Russell Springs Economic Development Director Jeramy Coffey said. “I think the council knows that it is contractual. If that doesn’t happen…things would happen to them.”
“Shogun is still moving forward,” Coffey told the council. “A possible tenant (for part of the building in which Shogun will be housed) has their plans drawn up.”
“All this has been sent to their architects,” he said, “and they’re running numbers now.”
Daniel said the inquiry was “not meant to put you on the spot.”
“I thought if you put it out there openly that we are moving forward, it might stop some of the rumors,” she said.
Russell Springs Mayor Eddie Thomas said the people bringing Shogun to the area “wanted to get another tenant (which is believed to be another restaurant) in before they started the plumbing…and pouring the concrete…and everything.”
“They only want to build it once,” he explained, “and not build it twice. So, if it took an extra month or two for them to get them a tenant, it’s been worth it. They can do both at the same time.”
Councilman Cody Wilson likened it to “buy one, get one free” situation.
“On this one, yes, it could be,” Coffey confirmed. “It looks good.”
“Geo work” has been done at the site adjacent to Five Star off U.S. 127, and developers are in talks with a “real good” candidate to occupy the building with Shogun.
Other economic development projects are underway.
Coffey said he and the mayor had recently met with a possible “hotel investor.”
“We’re going to go through due diligence of getting stuff for them and trying to figure out their credentials, “ he said.
City officials also travelled to Paris, KY, “and we talked to some people about a restaurant,” Coffey said. “There’s a lot of stuff that seems to be happening.”
