Surrounded by friends, family and teammates, Russell County three-sport sensation Owen Loy signed to play for Western Kentucky University (WKU) last week.
A large crowd packed the lobby of the Russell County High School (RCHS) Friday as Owen, son of Darrell and Lori Loy, of Jamestown, made his commitment to the WKU gridiron squad.
“We’re so proud of Owen,” Russell County Schools Athletic Director (AD) Michael Carpenter said. “It seems like it was just the other day he was coming in here for Elementary PE and now he’s going off to college.”
“We will miss him,” Carpenter said. “He is a leader in the building, on the field, the court, and a lot of people look up to him.”
“I know he’s going to represent Russell County High School 100 percent the best he can,” the AD said. “He’s worked so hard to get to this point. He’s very well-deserving and I hope some of the underclassman take a little chip of that work effort and put that into your routine, and good things will happen.”
“The fact to do all this and be a three-sport athlete (football, basketball and baseball) is almost unheard of in this day and time,” Carpenter said. “It’s demanding year-round, all day, every day.”
“Owen has put in the time, put in the work,” RCHS Football Coach Steve French said.
Coach French said Owen has always been involved, has always practiced, planned, and put in the hard work for a moment such as this.
“To get to this point, you’ve got to put the time in to do those things,” he said. “He’s got the intangibles to get there and be successful at that level.”
“We’re really proud of him,” Russell County Laker Baseball Coach David Rexroat said.
Laker Basketball Coach Brandon Cooper said the signee is a true team player and works to the best of his ability in any sport he plays.
Humbled with the turn-out for the event, Loy was appreciative to everyone who attended.
“I just want to thank everybody,” he said. “I’m so grateful for this opportunity.”
