Star Russell County athlete Rylen McGowan began her college career with a bang last week.
Literally.
Friday, in a crowded Russell County High School (RCHS) Library, surrounded by friends, family, and teammates, Rylen was startled, surprised, and delighted when confetti cannons boomed to celebrate her signing to attend and play for Wallace Community College in Dothan, Alabama.
“We’re real excited for her,” RCHS Athletic Director Michael Carpenter said. “Rylan is a four-sport athlete for Russell County High School. There’s not that many four-sport athletes that come through. We know she’s going to represent Russell County well.”
“We’re going to miss her,” RCHS Lady Lake Coach Joey Bell said. “She’s an outstanding player, don’t know what we’re going to do without her.”
McGowan led the Russell County High School Lady Laker Softball team last season by racking up an impressive .511 batting average which includes 11 home runs, 46 hits, and 36 RBIs.
Hours after her signing, Rylen was recognized at a scrimmage for breaking both a career and season fast pitch home run record last season, and also honored for recording 100 hits in her varsity career.
McGowan has already smacked home runs in scrimmages against Somerset and Taylor County.
